Phonics toolkit

The Phonics Toolkit is used as part of a balanced approach to phonics instruction. It includes information booklets, desk tents, games, playing cards, flash cards and wall posters and suggested activities and ideas for their use. It also includes an images library and templates to make your own kit in your preferred font.

Phonics Toolkit

The Phonics Toolkit is a resource for teachers and is designed to be used as part of a systematic approach to phonics instruction. The kit supports the explicit teaching of phonics and enables teachers to target their teaching to cater for the individual needs of all students. Kindergarten to Year 2 teachers are encouraged to use the phonics toolkit alongside the following Department of Education resources to ensure all components of a balanced phonics program are implemented.

The Phonics Toolkit supports Kindergarten to Year 2 teachers when teaching the Western Australian Curriculum: English, Phonological and phonemic awareness and Alphabet and phonic knowledge, threads. It also supports students to develop preparatory literacy skills as described in the Early Years Learning Framework and the Kindergarten Curriculum Guidelines.

How to make your own phonics resources

Teachers use the Phonics Toolkit to introduce the whole class to graphemes, phonemes, images and words. This supports explicit teaching of phonological and phonemic awareness, and alphabet and phonic knowledge. After explicit teaching, the resources can be used by students in small group practice activities. This booklet provides tips for easy use of the ‘Make your own’ templates.
