The Young Person's Guide to Personal Safety is a resource suite for students, secondary school staff, and the trusted adults in their lives. It consists of 3 resources:
Together, the resources:
- build the confidence and capability of students and trusted adults to recognise and respond to safety concerns, disclosures and conversations
- contribute to safer school communities
- support the implementation of child safe organisation principles across Western Australian public schools.
The Young person’s guide supports schools to deliver protective behaviours education for older secondary students. The resource includes dedicated chapters on a range of contemporary issues affecting young people, including personal safety, abuse, consent, respectful relationships, online safety, exploitation, wellbeing and help-seeking. This guide is currently only available to public school students. Department staff can access the guide through Connect Discover. The Department is working towards making the digital resource more widely available in the future.
The Trusted adult guide supports teachers, principals and student support staff to engage in timely, age-appropriate conversations with students about personal safety, wellbeing and help-seeking.
The Trusted adult tipsheets are designed to be shared with other trusted adults such as parents and carers to support young people’s safety and wellbeing. They include clear strategies, example language and quick responses to help parents and carers have effective conversations, recognise concerns, and build trust.
This project was developed by the Department of Education and funded by the WA Intervention and Support Program.
